vivo confirms that the X80 Pro+ was canceled, as we turn towards waiting for the X90 Pro+

A few weeks ago we learned that vivo was gearing up to unveil the X80 Pro+ in September, however, those plans were met with unexpected delays. We’re almost into October now and still no Pro+ in sight, so we spoke to a company representative just after the vivo X Fold+ launch.

They gave us the bad news – the vivo X80 Pro+ has been canceled. Well, “bad” is relative since the next generation is almost here. The vivo X70 series was unveiled in early September 2021, then in late April 2022 came the X80 series. It’s time for the X90 models to arrive.

vivo didn’t give us official details on that launch, but leakster Ice Universe reports that the vivo X90 Pro+ is coming in December. It will pack a 1” main sensor and a new telephoto sensor (and bespoke telephoto processing), plus the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, along with a Samsung E6 AMOLED display.

The X80 Pro+ was supposed to feature the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (up from the original 8 Gen 1) and there was talk of a camera upgrade – replacing the 12MP 2x and 8MP 5x tele cameras of the X80 Pro with a pair of 50MP modules (one with a JN1 sensor, one with JN2). However, the main camera was still supposed to use the 1/1.3” GNV sensor (a custom version of Samsung’s GN1).

It would have been a solid upgrade had it actually launched this month, but considering the delays it makes more sense to jump straight to the X90 Pro+. First, the 8 Gen 2 was specifically designed for TSMC’s foundries (the 8+ Gen 1 was a bit of a rush job), plus the new RAM and storage standards promise higher bandwidths and lower power usage (up to 46% in the case of UFS 4.0). Also, 1” sensors will be the next big thing (literally) for camera-focused flagships.
